Music Lessons

Tuesday 7 January 2020 saw the sad passing of a truly great and inspirational drummer. Neil Peart was the drummer and lyricist in Canadian progressive rock band Rush. Over the 40 years that he played and toured with them he wrote some of the most inspirational lyrics and drum parts in rock history.

One of the great things about being a music teacher is the way that you can pass on the inspiration and legacy of some amazingly talented people to a whole new audience and hopefully help start someone on that wonderful journey of discovery and creativity that is music.

Being able to play a musical instrument, or sing, is a skill that can give you joy and pleasure, as well as no small amount of frustration 😀, for an entire lifetime. There is even evidence to suggest that learning a musical instrument can help towards avoiding Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions. Evidence also suggests that children learning a musical instrument do much better in mathematics, communication skills and problem solving than those that are not.

You may have noticed that I used the word skill rather than gift or talent when referring to playing music. I have been teaching drum lessons in Eastbourne for about 10 years and I firmly believe that anyone can learn to play a musical instrument. The only difference between those that can and those that cannot is practice. The more we do something, anything, the better we get at it!

So if you have ever thought about learning to play, don’t put it off, do something about it today... Sing along, tap your feet, play air guitar, bang on the table... just start enjoying music and trying to join in with what you hear.

Phil came to my sons 4th birthday party with lots of different drums the children loved it and it was such a lovely change to get a lot of them to interact with this activity rather than the usual soft play etc... We had a lot of positive comments from the other parents! Thank you Phill!
